ABOUT US

Founded by former pupils unable to be accommodated within the prevailing group structures at Innes Chambers, Group 16 Advocates has emerged as the second oldest group of advocates at the Johannesburg Bar.

This bold and indomitable spirit of our early members, almost all of whom have now taken silk – some having been elevated to the bench, has suitably equipped us to render a range of professional legal services extending to every aspect of practice at the Bar.  Our members regularly appear in various forums across the land and neighbouring states – from arbitrations, enquiries and tribunals to Magistrates’ Court’s, Superior Courts and the Constitutional Court.

From conception to nascence, and ever since, our group has been progressive. We were the first group of advocates to be led by a woman and to be blessed with a membership as diverse as our nation. We are unashamedly transformative and strive to break the shackles of the past; both in regard to historical briefing patterns and the transfer of skills, and so open the doors to more lucrative and challenging briefs. Our transformation fund is designed to alleviate the financial burdens of practice at the Bar.

Our offerings include the use of our boardrooms and state of the art witness room, at a nominal fee.  These have been fully installed with the latest technology and are purpose-geared towards hosting arbitrations and virtual hearings.
